by 2,000 3,000 people. Thanks to Pamela Munro and members of the audience at LexicalFunctional Grammar 2003 for comments on this paper. Special thanks to Luisa Martínez, who provided all the SDZ data. An earlier version of this paper was presented at Lexical-Functional Grammar 2003. The orthography for SDZ is adapted from the practical orthographies for other Zapotec languages spoken in the Valley of Oaxaca. In the SDZ orthography symbols have their usual phonetic values, with the following exceptions. = /š/ before a vowel and /ž/ before a consonant, = /š/, = /dž/, = /tš/, = /k/ before back vowels, = /k/ before front vowels, = trilled /r/, and = /e/. Doubled vowels are long. SDZ is a language with four contrastive phonation types: breathy , creaky , checked , and plain . Glosses use the following abbreviations: a=animal, aff = affirmative, cer = certainty, com = completive aspect, con = continuative aspect, cs = causative, def = definite future aspect, dem = demonstrative, foc = focus, hab = habitual aspect, neg = negative, p = possessed, plur = plural, pot = potential aspect, q = question, r=respect, ref=reflexive, rel = relative, stat= stative aspect, top=topic.

New evidence for a Mesoamerican homeland for Proto-Uto-Aztecan.
Merrill et al. (1) find “untenable” the hypothesis that speakers of Proto-Uto-Aztecan (PUA) were maize cultivators in or near Mesoamerica. Linguistic evidence supporting this hypothesis was first assembled in ref. 2 and additional evidence is cited here. Of central importance to the proposal is that a word for maize, **sunu, reconstructs for PUA. Although reflexes of the latter word were not re...

This paper will describe typologically unusual onset clusters in Choapan Zapotec, an Oto-Manguean language spoken in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. Onset clusters in Choapan Zapotec (CHO) violate sonority sequencing principles (SSP) in theoretically problematic ways; prohibitions in CHO against almost all types of coda consonants combine with these facts to create even more problems for cu...

However, Otomanguean is perhaps the least 6 understood of the major Mesoa...

0. Introduction Huave is a language isolate spoken in four villages on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico: San Mateo, San Francisco, San Dionisio, and Santa María. This paper examines the pitch accent system in the San Mateo dialect, the only dialect which has preserved lexical tone. In this paper, “pitch accent” is used broadly to refer to the interaction of lexical tone and phrasal accent (see Hyman...
